Commonwealth Games 2010

The Commonwealth Games 2010 will be the largest multi-sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games to be witnessed between 3rd and 14th October 2010 in Delhi. The city is gearing up at a fast pace in terms of sporting infrastructure, transport etc and will be hosting these games for the first time. The government and private agencies are doing their bit to ensure smooth transport of players between the venues and the games village and special bus transport in Delhi will be put in place for the same. About Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth games (CWG), a multi-nation sporting event played between the members of the Commonwealth of Nations, is hosted every four years and started way back in 1930 under the title of the British Empire Games. Then it was called British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, the British Commonwealth Games in 1970, and finally got its current title in 1978. 71 teams participate in the games and the 2006 event was held in Melbourne while the games come to Delhi in 2010.

Commonwealth Games venues

Existing and new sporting venues have been chosen to host the CWG 2010 in Delhi. 260 events in 17 disciplines will be spread across the length and breadth of the Indian capital while the Games Village will provide residential facilities for the participating athletes.

While the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be hosting the Opening and Closing ceremonies, it will also be the venue for Athletics, Lawn bowls and Weightlifting. The Dhyan Chand Stadium will host hockey while the Indira Gandhi Arena will see Archery, cycling, gymnastics and wrestling events taking place. The sports complex of Delhi University will play host to Rugby events while Netball will be held at Thyagaraj Stadium.

Badminton and Squash will be held in Siri Fort Sports Complex and shooting will take place in the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range. The Talkatora Stadium will be the venue for Boxing while all aquatics will be held at the SPM Swimming pool complex. Tennis will be played at the RK Khanna Tennis Complex while Table Tennis competitions will take place at the Yamuna Sports Complex. There will be special Delhi buses running between these venues to haul players and visitors and the bus transport in Delhi is also being revamped for the same.
